The House of Bread at Christchurch was once a Bakery and Baldwin’s Shop. So whether you are staying with us at The House of Bread or a local then we are delighted to announce our New Bread Classes for 2017.

We have teamed up with Dede Liss who is an experienced Artisan Bread Making tutor to run the classes and you will be making and cooking your bread in the cosy tea-room space at Hot Pot Pottery (at The House of Bread).

Dede is passionate about helping people to learn how to make really good bread in a ‘hands on way’ easy to replicate at home. Her courses are fun and interesting and full of great tips on making authentic artisan style bread.

Dede was a founder member of the Forest Bakehouse; the first artisan bakery in the Forest of Dean and we are delighted to have her to help bring Bread Making Back to The House of Bread.

Our classes for 2017:

An introduction to Artisan Bread Making

Dates: Thur 13 July or Tues 15 Aug 2017
Times: 10am-3pm
Cost: £55.00

You will have heard about the ‘Real Ale Campaign’ but you might not heard of the ‘Real Bread Campaign’. It’s an artisan revival of truly delicious bread using simple ingredients; flour water salt and yeast. Making bread is a craft and using skills that are easy to learn, your tutor Dede will share her knowledge and skills with you to show you how to make delicious wholesome bread that doesn’t cost a fortune.

Course outline: You will learn how to make a Bloomer, Fougasse, Pitta and Baguette.

You will learn about:

  • long fermentation dough method
  • sponge and dough method
  • five stages of bread making: mixing , kneading, shaping, proving , baking
  • different flours and gluten
  • dried and fresh yeast

NB: for long fermentation Dede will bring her own pre-prepared dough but you also get to make your own dough on the day for making, shaping and cooking.

Christmas traditionally was a time when people treated themselves to food not usually eaten any other time of the year. So delicious food sweetened with chocolate, nuts, sugar and fruit, made even better with the addition of eggs and butter.

Dede has brought together some delicious recipes from across Europe to share with you on her Christmas Breads course. So join Dede just before Christmas to learn how to make delicious Christmas Bread for yourself and indulge yourselves!

Course outline: you will learn how to make Italian Panettone, German Stollen, Authentic German Lebkuchen and Dutch Speculaas Spelt Xmas Biscuits.

You will learn about:

  • how to make and work with sweet enriched doughs
  • five stages of bread making
  • different flours
  • dried and fresh yeast

Stay at The House of Bread Cottages 10&11 Dec 2016 & get your Christmas shopping done at the same time!

At the The House of Bread Cottages we also run Hot Pot Pottery tea-room & gallery and will be having our Christmas Fayre 10&11 Dec 11-4.

So if you were staying with us in Home Cottage or Old Bakery Cottage over that weekend (dates still available) you could get all your Christmas Shopping done at the same time!

There will be a range of locally made craft for sale (including our pottery). There will be home-made Christmas treats & freshly prepared Christmas platters/home-made soup & hot/cold drinks.

The wood-burner will be on & you can create your own unique Christmas presents/decorations with ‘Paint-your-Own’ pottery. We will be firing Sat eve so anything painted Sat will be ready for collection Sun.

Also, to finish, we will have live Christmas music from Forest Flutes between 2-4pm on the Sunday.

Bread Making Makes a Return to The House of Bread! The House of Bread (Cottages & B&B) in Christchurch was, at one time, Baldwin’s Bakery & Shop & we are delighted to announce that bread making will return to The House of Bread this year in the form of Bread Making Courses with Dede Liss (a founder member of the Forest Bakehouse, the first Artisan Bakery in the Forest of Dean).

 Our first bread-making course will be Christmas Breads on 26 November 2016

Traditionally Christmas and Festive breads are all about celebrating using rich, luxuriant ingredients. Join Dede in the cosy tea-room & gallery at The House of Bread (& Hot Pot Pottery) to learn how to make Stollen, authentic Eislen Lebkuchen and special festive spelt biscuits just in time for Christmas.

This first course will be Saturday 26 Nov 2016 from 10-3pm and will be easy to follow, informative, relaxed and fun. The cost will be just £65 including all ingredients & lunch and you will of course get to take home and enjoy your Christmas Bread creations!

The House of Bread to provide accommodation for new ‘Four Elements’ creative and well-being retreat from Wye Forest Retreats

At The House of Bread and Hot Pot Pottery, we are delighted to be providing the restful accommodation, reflection space and pottery experience on a NEW retreat from Wye Forest Retreats (also in association with Way2Go Adventures).

‘The Four Elements’ retreat will help you ‘Find a Mindful Mindset this Midsummer’ or ‘Become Grounded in Glorious Autumn’ in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Forest of Dean.

During the retreat, the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water will all be combined in perfect balance for a 7-day creative adventure and wellbeing experience.

Easter Creativity at The House of Bread and Hot Pot Pottery

Get creative while you stay with us at Easter! To celebrate the re-opening of our tea-room and gallery for 2016 (Hot Pot Pottery at The House of Bread) we will be having a weekend of Easter Pottery Painting in the gallery and tea-room. We have cute Easter Bunnies and Easter Egg Cups for you to paint. AND if you paint Good Fri-Easter Sun they will be glazed and fired by Easter Mon.
